Common land given to the National Trust
Witley and Milford Commons were bought by local residents and presented to the National Trust in December 1905, protecting a large stretch of heath and woodland that has been used by people in the area since the Bronze Age, when the bowl barrows still visible on the common were built.
A wartime camp for thousands of soldiers
From January 1915, Witley Common was home to a large military camp used to train British and Canadian troops before they went to the trenches, at one point housing around 20,000 soldiers along with a veterinary hospital.
