The industry's roots stretch back further still, to a grant of land at Dyer's Cross to a glassmaker in the thirteenth century, long before the trade reached its Elizabethan peak.
A smithy preserved for the nation
One of the country's few intact traditional village green smithies still stands in Chiddingfold, handed over for preservation in 1938 rather than being lost to later redevelopment.
